ANNUAL CONFERENCE KEYNOTE: Dr. Pooja K. Agarwal, Cognitive Scientist, Educator, & Author, Powerful Teaching: Unleash the Science of Learning

Pooja K. Agarwal, Ph.D. is a cognitive scientist, conducting research on how students learn since 2005. She is the author of the book Powerful Teaching: Unleash the Science of Learning and an Associate Professor of Psychology at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, teaching psychological science to exceptional undergraduate musicians. Dr. Agarwal is also the Founder of RetrievalPractice.org, a source of research-based teaching strategies for more than 20,000 teachers around the world. Dr. Agarwal’s research has been published in leading peer-reviewed academic journals; featured in The New York Times, NPR, Scientific American, and Education Week; recognized by the National Science Foundation; and highlighted in numerous books, podcasts, and videos. Dr. Agarwal received her Ph.D. from Washington University in St. Louis. Her love of learning formed at the outset of her career as a 4th and 5th grade teacher in St. Louis, Missouri.

For the 2024 Annual Conference, VAIS is seeking proposals to support educators at all levels of the independent school context. The event aims to broaden our understanding of continued excellence informed by modern research and practice within the Independent School context in 2024 as our school communities continue to thrive. 

 

NOMINATIONS FOR THE INNOVATION IN EDUCATION AWARD
The Virginia Association of Independent Schools presents three annual awards (by division for Early Childhood/Lower, Middle, and Upper School) to honor educators and recognize those individuals in VAIS schools who make positive impacts in their communities by inspiring students’ excitement about learning, motivating colleagues to grow professionally, and impacting the school community in positive and tangible ways.To submit a nomination or self-nomination, please complete the 2024 Innovation in Education Award form HERE. The applicant must be a current VAIS educator. Please submit nominations before September 15, 2024. Winners will be announced on November 4, 2024 at the VAIS Annual Conference.
